However, few people know that a large number of trademarks have been registered that include the word \u201cHalloween\u201d, whether written in Japanese Katakana as \u201c\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30f3\u201d or \u201c\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30fc\u30f3\u201d, or in Roman letters as \u201dHALLOWEEN\u201d or \u201cHalloween\u201d in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to search results from the J-PlatPat (Japan Platform for Patent Information) as of October 7, 2025, there are over 200 trademarks containing these words (including those combined with other words or graphical elements).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the trademarks currently valid in Japan, the oldest application related to \u201cHalloween\u201d was filed on May 13, 1987, for the mark \u201c\u30cf\u30c3\u30d4\u30fc\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30fc\u30f3\uff0fHAPPY HALLOWEEN\u201d (a two-tiered combination of Japanese and English characters). The designated goods are \u201cconfectionery and bread\u201d in Class 30, and the owner is the major confectionery company Morinaga & Co., Ltd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later that same year, on October 26, 1987, another well-known confectionery brand, Fujiya Co., Ltd., applied for a trademark combining the word \u201c\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30fc\u30f3\u201d (Halloween in Katakana) with a pumpkin design, also designating \u201cconfectionery and bread\u201d in Class 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Japan introduced the service mark system, many trademark applications started designating the services in Class 41, such as \u201cplanning, management, or organization of entertainment events.\u201d Examples of trademarks registered for such event-related services are \u201c\u6e0b\u8c37\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30f3\u201d (Shibuya Halloween in Kanji and Katakana) and \u201c\u516d\u672c\u6728\u30cf\u30ed\u30a6\u30a3\u30f3\u201d\u3000(Roppongi Halloween in Kanji and Katakana).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Autumn, numerous festivals and events are held across the country. Familiar names like \u201cHalloween\u201d may have already been protected as trademarks.
